  1. SUMMARY

The Golf Competition was organised to provide the Fijian Community in Victoria access and open doors to working together with the Melbourne Airport Golf Club that has one of the highest members of Golfers of Fijian origin living in Melbourne. The Bula Golf Club which has membership consisting of Fijian Golfers is affiliated to the Melbourne Airport Golf Club.

As Club members of both the Melbourne Airport Golf Club and the Bula Golf Club, we the Interim President and Vice President of FCAV, Mr Lewaqai and Mr Driu respectively saw this as an opportunity for the Fijian Community Association to tap into involving these members in activities of our Fijian Community and sharing of resources where we both can benefit as individual Organisations working together. Also, we saw this as an opportunity for the Association to boost its memberships by signing in participating non-members to become members.

At the end of the Golf Competition, the participants were all happy, networking and getting to know each other. The Melbourne Airport Golf Club President has given their support and promised to help FCAV in sharing with us the resources that they have and include them in our Network loop. Bula Golf Club have also given their support to FCAV.

2.0    INTRODUCTION

Spreading the net of Inclusivity is an important exercise for the Fijian Community Association of Victoria to get committed into if it needs to see growth and healthy development into a truly multicultural Fijian Community Organisation to enable us to address issues concerning our members and at the same time bring a positive sense of unity that augurs well with the aims of our Government and Donor Organisations promoting multiculturalism and living in Diversity.

The Fiji Day Golf Cup competition was an initiative by both the FCAV Interim President and Vice President that was started through various meetings with all stakeholders and eventuated into a plan to start the competition on Friday 14th October 2016, a day before the 2016 Melbourne Fiji Day Multicultural Festival. The idea was to bring together more members of our community in celebrating the Fiji Day. FCAV needs to make inroads in getting involved with other community members in the different environments that they live in whether it is in Sports, Religion, Social Clubs etc. to enable them to feel that they a part of the Organisation and give them confidence to participate on various community issues.

Picking Golf as a Fiji Day Sport was the result of proper consultation and studies that mainly focussed on areas of Capacity Building and Resource sharing while other objectives targeted memberships and support for the Organisation. Golf is played by all levels of people from students right up to Business Entrepreneurs and professionals. There are a lot of people with positive ideas and experts in their own fields like doctors, accountants, lawyers and administrators that play the game. FCAV would benefit a lot from this Sport if we build it up as one of our activities in our Fiji Day Celebration event.
